Our Story

Two Islands. One Family. One Kava.

We are not importing kava. We are sharing what our family grows.

The Kava Shop is a New Zealand business with genuine roots in Fiji. Our father's family is from ColoColo, Taveuni, the heritage behind the name Colocolo Gold. Our mother's family is from Kadavu, and that is where we source.

When you buy from us, you are not buying from an anonymous importer. You are buying from a family with direct ties to the land and the people who grow this kava.

Preparation

How to Brew Your First Bowl

All you need is a cloth or strainer bag and 15 minutes.

01

Measure

Add 2 to 4 tablespoons of Colocolo Gold to a muslin cloth or strainer bag. Start lighter if you are new to kava.

02

Steep

Place the cloth in a bowl of warm water, about 250ml per serve. Fully submerge the bag.

03

Knead

Squeeze and work the bag for 5 to 10 minutes. The water will turn a milky, earthy brown. That is your kava.

04

Bula!

Pour into a cup or bilo, say Bula, and drink. Calm settles in within 10 to 20 minutes. Enjoy the moment.

🌿 What Is Kava
What is kava?
Kava (Piper methysticum) is a plant native to the Pacific Islands, where it has been cultivated and used for thousands of years in ceremonial, social, and cultural contexts. The root is ground and mixed with water to create a drink prized for its calming, relaxing properties. Unlike alcohol, kava promotes a sense of calm and wellbeing without impairing clarity or causing a hangover.
What does kava feel like?
Most people experience a gentle relaxation, a sense of calm and ease without drowsiness or mental fog. Kava is often described as taking the edge off without taking you out. The active compounds, called kavalactones, act on the nervous system to reduce anxiety and promote sociability. Effects typically begin within 20–30 minutes and last 2–4 hours.
What's the difference between noble and tudei kava?
Noble kava refers to traditional varieties cultivated specifically for safe, regular consumption. They produce clean, balanced effects and are considered the gold standard for drinking kava. Tudei (or "two-day") kava is a different variety that can cause prolonged side effects including nausea, lethargy, and dermopathy with regular use. All kava we sell is 100% noble variety.
Is kava legal in New Zealand?
Yes. Kava is legal to purchase, possess, and consume in New Zealand for personal use. It is not a controlled substance. Kava has long standing cultural significance in the Pacific community in New Zealand, and it is widely consumed.
πŸͺ£ Preparation
How do I prepare kava?
Traditional preparation is simple. Add 2–4 tablespoons of kava powder to a muslin or straining bag. Place the bag into a bowl with 1–2 cups of cool or lukewarm water (not hot water, heat can degrade the kavalactones). Knead and squeeze the bag in the water for 5–10 minutes until the water turns a deep earthy brown. Remove the bag, squeeze out all remaining liquid, and serve in a shell or cup. Start with a smaller dose and adjust to your preference.
Do I need special equipment?
All you need is a muslin straining bag (sometimes called a kava strainer or nut milk bag), a bowl, and water. A traditional tanoa (carved wooden bowl) adds to the experience but is entirely optional. Straining bags are inexpensive and available at most kitchenware or health food stores.
How much kava should I use?
For beginners, start with 2 tablespoons (around 10–12g) per 1.5 cups of water. Regular drinkers often use 3–4 tablespoons per session. Kava can take time to work, many people report a "reverse tolerance" effect where the first few sessions feel mild before the effects become more pronounced. Give it a few tries before adjusting your dose.
Can I mix kava with anything?
Kava is traditionally consumed on its own. Avoid mixing with alcohol, as both affect the central nervous system and the combination can intensify sedative effects. Some people add a small amount of coconut cream or lecithin to help extract the kavalactones more efficiently, this is a legitimate technique and can improve potency.
🚚 Shipping & Delivery
Where do you ship?
We currently ship to all addresses within New Zealand. We're working on expanding to Australia and other Pacific destinations.
How long does delivery take?
Most orders are dispatched within 1–2 business days. Delivery typically takes 2–5 business days depending on your location. Rural addresses may take slightly longer. You'll receive a tracking number once your order ships.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on your location and order size. Free shipping at checkout for orders above $120.
Will my order be discreetly packaged?

βœ… Returns & Quality
What's your quality guarantee?

Can I return kava if I don't like it?

If you're new to kava, we recommend starting with the 100g Starter Pack to try it before committing to a larger size. If there is a quality issue with your order, please reach out we'll always find a fair resolution.
My order arrived damaged, what do I do?
We're sorry to hear that. Please email us at himextradingltd@gmail.com with your order number and a photo of the damage within 7 days of receiving your parcel. We'll arrange a replacement or refund promptly.
