Macawa ni Vosa vakaViti Β· 4 to 10 October

Happy Fijian Language Week

Bula! Ni sa bula vinaka kece sara. Greetings, everyone.

This year's theme

Na noqu vosa me tekivu mai vale ka me'u na vosataka e na veisiga.

My language starts at home and I need to speak it every day.

Fijian Language Week celebrates Vosa Vakaviti, the iTaukei language. It was first held in Aotearoa in 2013 and is part of the Pacific Language Weeks, which began with Samoan Language Week in 2007. Communities lead it each year with support from the Ministry for Pacific Peoples, and this year it ends on Fiji Day, 10 October, the anniversary of Fiji's independence in 1970.

Our family comes from Taveuni and Kadavu, and our kava is grown on Kadavu and sourced through our own family. Vinaka for celebrating the language with us.

Made for Community

In Fiji, kava is how you welcome guests, celebrate milestones, and simply spend time together.

🌱

Three Thousand Years of Tradition

Pacific Islanders have shared kava for over 3,000 years. This is not a wellness trend.

Our Story

Two Islands. One Family. One Kava.

We are not importing kava. We are sharing what our family grows.

The Kava Shop is a New Zealand business with genuine roots in Fiji. Our father's family is from Colocolo, Taveuni. Our mother's family is from Kadavu, and that is where we source.

When you buy from us, you are not buying from an anonymous importer. You are buying from a family with direct ties to the land and the people who grow this kava.

Preparation

How to Brew Your First Bowl

All you need is a cloth or strainer bag and 15 minutes.

01

Measure

Add 2 to 4 tablespoons of our kava to a muslin cloth or strainer bag. Start lighter if you are new to kava.

02

Steep

Place the cloth in a bowl of warm water, about 250ml per serve. Fully submerge the bag.

03

Knead

Squeeze and work the bag for 5 to 10 minutes. The water will turn a milky, earthy brown. That is your kava.

04

Bula!

Pour into a cup or bilo, say Bula, and drink. Effects begin within 10 to 20 minutes. Enjoy the moment.

One of the best kava suppliers I have found in New Zealand. Consistently high quality, and the 500g is incredible value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our kava, from the first shell to your hundredth.

🌿 What Is Kava
What is kava?
Kava (Piper methysticum) is a plant native to the Pacific Islands, cultivated and shared for thousands of years in ceremonial, social, and cultural contexts. The root is ground and mixed with cool water to make the drink at the centre of a gathering: the sevusevu, the tanoa circle, the shared bilo. Unlike alcohol, kava is drunk to slow an evening down rather than speed it up. Clarity stays intact, and there's no hangover in the morning. Kava is a supplement, not a medicine, and we make no therapeutic claims.
What does kava feel like?
Most people describe a gentle change of pace, noticeable without taking you out. The active compounds in the root are called kavalactones. Effects typically begin within 10 to 20 minutes and last 2 to 4 hours. Everyone reacts differently, so start with a smaller shell and find your own baseline. Many first-timers notice very little in their first session or two. That's normal, and it's worth giving it a few tries.
What's the difference between noble and tudei kava?
Noble kava is the group of traditional varieties cultivated for safe, regular consumption. It produces clean, balanced effects and is considered the gold standard for drinking kava. Tudei (or "two-day") kava is a different variety that can cause prolonged side effects with regular use, including nausea, lethargy, and dermopathy. Every bag we sell is 100% noble.
Is kava legal in New Zealand?
Yes. Kava is legal to purchase, possess, and consume in New Zealand for personal use, and it isn't a controlled substance. It also has long-standing cultural significance in New Zealand's Pacific community and is widely consumed here.
πŸͺ£ Preparation
How do I prepare kava?
Traditional preparation is simple. Add 2 to 4 tablespoons of kava powder to a muslin or straining bag. Place the bag into a bowl with 1 to 2 cups of cool or lukewarm water, not hot: heat can degrade the kavalactones. Knead and squeeze the bag in the water for 5 to 10 minutes until the water turns a deep earthy brown. Remove the bag, squeeze out the remaining liquid, and serve in a shell or cup. Start with a smaller dose and adjust from there.
Do I need special equipment?
All you need is a muslin straining bag (sometimes called a kava strainer or nut milk bag), a bowl, and water. A traditional tanoa, a carved wooden bowl, adds to the experience but is optional. Straining bags are inexpensive and available at most kitchenware or health food stores.
How much kava should I use?
For beginners, start with 2 tablespoons (around 10 to 12g) per 1.5 cups of water. Regular drinkers often use 3 to 4 tablespoons per session. Kava can take time to work: many people report a "reverse tolerance" effect, where the first few sessions feel mild before the effects become more pronounced. Give it a few tries before adjusting your dose.
Can I mix kava with anything?
Kava is traditionally consumed on its own. Avoid mixing it with alcohol: both affect the central nervous system, and combining them can intensify sedative effects. Some people add a small amount of coconut cream or lecithin to help extract the kavalactones more efficiently. It's a legitimate technique and can improve potency.
🚚 Shipping & Delivery
Where do you ship?
We ship to all addresses within New Zealand. We don't currently ship internationally.
How long does delivery take?
Most orders are dispatched within 1 to 3 business days. Once you receive your tracking number, delivery typically takes 2 to 3 business days for most addresses, and 2 to 4 business days for rural addresses.
How much does shipping cost?
Standard shipping is $11.50 NZD on orders under $160, and free on orders of $160 or more (after any discount codes). Local delivery is available within 10km of our Auckland branch: $10 on orders between $35 and $84.99, and free on orders $85 and over.
Can I collect my order instead?
Yes, and it's free. Order online, choose Pickup at checkout, and we'll message you when it's ready, usually within 24 hours. Christchurch pickup is available 9am to 9pm daily, and Auckland pickup is available 10am to 9pm daily. Message or call ahead before you arrive: neither branch is a walk-in shop, so pickup needs to be arranged. Pickup is free at both.
Will my order be discreetly packaged?
Yes. All orders ship in plain, sealed packaging with no product branding on the outside. The sender name on the label will be The Kava Shop.
βœ… Returns & Quality
What's your quality guarantee?
We stand behind every bag of kava we ship. Our kava is sourced directly from Kadavu, Fiji, and is 100% noble. If your order arrives damaged, incorrect, or not as described, contact us within 14 days of receiving it and we'll make it right.
Can I return kava if I don't like it?
Kava isn't a food product. It's a plant root that can be used as a supplement. For hygiene reasons we can't take back opened kava, but unopened packs can be returned within 14 days. If you're new to kava, we recommend starting with the 100g Starter Pack before committing to a larger size. If there's a quality issue with your order, reach out and we'll find a fair resolution.
My order arrived damaged. What do I do?
We're sorry to hear that. Email us at himextradingltd@gmail.com with your order number and a photo of the damage within 14 days of receiving your parcel, and we'll arrange a replacement or refund promptly.
